Loyalists Travel To Ottawa For 6th Annual Al Charron Cup
May 11, 2017
Will Face St.Anne's, Ottawa Irish And St.John's Swilers
The Ottawa Irish host the sixth annual Eastern Canadian Club Tournament (ECCT) known as the Al Charron Cup this coming weekend at Twin Elm Rugby Park.
Started in 2012, the tournament features four of Eastern Canada’s historic rugby clubs the Swilers of St. John’s, the Ottawa Irish, the Fredericton Loyalists and Quebec’s Saint Anne de Bellevue. The clubs meet annually for regional bragging rights and to promote the importance of strong club rugby.
The winner receives the prestigious Al Charron Cup named after Canadian legend Al Charron a graduate and long-time proponent of club competition. The Swilers are the reigning champions having won the tournament two years in a row. Both the Irish and the Loyalists have yet to hoist the hard ware.
Last year’s tournament saw the emergence of Conor Keys who suited up with the Irish. Keys is now in New Zealand training in advance of this year’s World Cup Qualification coming up in late June in Hamilton. What new young talent will emerge this year?
For second year in a row the Danny King Memorial Award will be given to the tournament’s most valuable player. Prior to his passing 2016 King had played in a number of Charron Cup tournaments. He remains a much beloved figure in the rugby community for his passion and commitment to the game.
Also this year the women’s teams from the Irish, Swilers and Ste. Anne’s will play a series of games on Saturday afternoon.
